1932年7月2日、スペイン・アリカンテ県のアルコイに生まれる。
アマチュアギタリストの父の影響でギターを始める。
隣町ガンディアのギタリスト、サルバドール・ガルシアに師事した後、ギターの盛んなバレンシアに出て同地の音楽院で音楽理論を学び、ギターはラファエル・バラゲールに師事。
若くして才能を認められ、当時、世界最高の教授とうたわれたマドリッド音楽院主任教授のサインス・デ・ラ・マーサに3年間師事。
「私の生徒で最もすぐれたギタリストの１人」と絶賛された。
1958年、サンティアゴ・デ・コンポステラのセゴビアのマスタークラスに出席。
セゴビアの愛弟子の１人となり、「ホセ・ルイスの音色の美しさは無類である, 良い音の出し方は彼に学びなさい」と賞賛される。
「セゴビアの右手、レヒーノの左手を併せもつことがギタリストの理想」と語るように、彼のテクニックはセゴビアとレヒーノ・サインス・デ・ラ・マーサから受け継いだ。
功績
1961年、北西スペインのオレンセで開催された国際ギターコンクールで「マルガリータ・パストール賞」を受賞。
スペイン内外でコンサートを行い、絶賛を浴びる。
セゴビアの紹介で、1962年から7年間オーストラリアへ渡り、シドニー国立ギター音楽院で教鞭を執る。
1967年、35歳の時に初めて日本を訪れる。
CBSレコードから数枚のLPレコードを発売。
ヨーロッパ、アメリカでも精力的に演奏活動を展開。
苦難、そして復活
スペインに戻ったが、子供を次々に亡くす悲劇に見舞われ、6年間ギターを中断。
トラックの荷積みや洋服のセールスで生計を立てる。
1974年、日本人留学生たちの支援を受け、奇跡的に音楽活動を再開。
翌年マドリッドのアテネオでのコンサートが大成功を収める。
1980年、13年ぶりに日本公演を行い、再び人気を集める。
彼の住むアルコイには200人もの日本人留学生が訪れるようになる。
この出来事は、今もギター界の歴史に残る出来事として語り継がれている。
音楽の遺産
スペインの名器ホセ・ラミレス作のギターから、艶やかで芳醇な香りが立ち上るような音が紡ぎ出される。
時に楽器の限界を打ち破るような強烈なタッチ、時に楽器を慈しむかのような繊細なピアニシモ、ダイナミクスの豊かさ、音色のバリエーションは実に多彩。
どこまでもギターらしい、紛れもなくギターの音。どこから聴いてもギターと分かる、強烈なアイデンティティ。
テンポの揺れ、拍節感のずれ、そして過度なビブラート。
ラテンの血が脈打つ、スペインギターならではの「歌」がそこにある。
惜しまれながらの最期
クラシックギター界に大きな足跡を残した巨匠、アンドレス・セゴビアはかつてこう語った。
「美しい音の出し方を知りたいなら、ホセ・ルイス・ゴンザレスに尋ねなさい。」
1998年3月22日、7度目の日本公演を目前に控えていたホセ・ルイス・ゴンザレスは、心筋梗塞により急逝。享年65歳だった。

José Luís Gonzalez (1932 – 1998) / José Luis Gonzalez – Classical Guitarist [classical guitarist and composer].
Born 2 July 1932 in Alcoy, Alicante, Spain.
Began playing guitar under the influence of his father, an amateur guitarist.
After studying with Salvador García, a guitarist from the neighbouring town of Gandía, he left for Valencia, where the guitar was popular, to study music theory at the conservatory there, and guitar with Rafael Balaguer.
His talent was recognised at a young age, and he studied for three years under Sainz de la Maza, then head professor at the Conservatorio de Madrid, who was regarded as the best professor in the world.
He was acclaimed as ‘one of the best guitarists among my students’.
In 1958, he attended Segovia’s master classes in Santiago de Compostela.
Became one of Segovia’s favourite pupils and was praised as ‘José Luis has an incomparable beauty of tone, learn from him how to make a good sound’.
His technique was inherited from Segovia and Rejino Sáinz de la Maza, as he says: ‘The ideal of a guitarist is to have Segovia’s right hand and Rejino’s left hand.’
In 1961, he won the ‘Margarita Pastor Award’ at the International Guitar Competition in Orense, north-west Spain.
Performed concerts in Spain and abroad to great acclaim.
With Segovia’s introduction, he travelled to Australia for seven years from 1962 to teach at the National Guitar Conservatory of Sydney.
In 1967, at the age of 35, he visited Japan for the first time.
Several LP records were released on CBS Records.
He has performed energetically in Europe and the USA.
Returned to Spain, but tragedy struck when his children died one after the other, and he stopped playing guitar for six years.
He earned a living by loading trucks and selling clothes.
In 1974, with the support of Japanese students, he miraculously resumed his musical activities.
The following year, a concert at the Ateneo in Madrid was a great success.
In 1980, he toured Japan for the first time in 13 years and became popular again.
As many as 200 Japanese students began to visit him in Alcoy, where he lived.
This event is still talked about as a milestone in the history of the guitar world.
The one and only sound produced by José Ramírez’s guitars
The guitar, a Spanish masterpiece by José Ramírez, produces a sound that is lustrous and full-bodied, like a fragrance rising from the air.
The sound has a strong touch that sometimes breaks the limits of the instrument, sometimes a delicate pianissimo that seems to show affection for the instrument, richness of dynamics and a great variety of tonal variations.
The sound is unmistakably that of a guitar. A strong identity, recognisable as a guitar no matter where you listen.
Tempo swings, off-beat feel and excessive vibrato.
There is a ‘song’ that is unique to the Spanish guitar, pulsing with Latin blood.
Andrés Segovia, a master guitarist who left his mark on the world of classical guitar, once said: ‘If you want to know how to make beautiful sounds, you have to know how to make beautiful sounds.
If you want to know how to make a beautiful sound, ask José Luis González.’
On 22 March 1998, just before his seventh concert in Japan, José Luis González died suddenly of a myocardial infarction. He was 65 years old.
